How to keep eyes healthy for a long time?

Eyes are among the most quintessential organ of our body. Good vision is important to function well in all places, whether at work, home, or behind the wheel. Our eyes act like a window to this world which is full of vibrant colors. Our eyes help let us enjoy the indescribable beauty of our planet, the wonder of our loved one's happy faces, and the fascination of the worlds art. Our eyes can see the picturesque scenario's around us which even the highest quality camera lenses can't. So it's obvious we should pay attention to our eyes.

However, when we go outside, we are continually exposed to environmental irritants - UV rays, dust, foreign particles, and much more.

Here are some of the tips which you can adapt to your daily life to have healthy eyes.

  • Eat well: One of the factors which affect eye health is our eating habits. Good food means good eyes. Nutrients like vitamin C and E, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, lutein can help ward off age-related vision problems like cataract and macular degeneration. Foods like green leafy vegetables, nuts, beans, citrus fruits or juices are some which can be included in your diet. A well-balanced diet helps you to stay healthy and can lower the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes, which is the primary cause of blindness.
  • Exercise: Exercising improves blood circulation in the body, which in turn removes toxins and improves oxygen levels to the eyes.
  • A good night's sleep: You will see the difference when you sleep for 6-8 hours every night. You will start performing well at home or work, look good, and improve your eye health.
  • Blue light from digital devices: Looking at screens for too long can cause blurry vision, eyestrain, dry eyes, neck, back, and shoulder pain, trouble focusing at a distance, headaches. Try to blink more when your eyes are dry. Try to blink your eyes after every 20 minutes, and look somewhere else for 20 seconds. Recently more devices contain blue light filters which can be used to decrease eyestrain as well.
  • Cosmetics: Someone who likes to wear eye makeup should only use products that are allergy tested and free of preservatives. Some products irritate the eyes by assailing the protective film of grease on the cornea. At night, it is necessary to remove any mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow from your eyelashes and eyelids.

In addition to these, visit your optometrist regularly. Early treatment for eye health problems can prevent them from getting critical. So people who notice changes in their eyesight should schedule a comprehensive eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
